Pocket Forests - Growing a Greener Future
In 2025–26, Nipaluna Nursery established 14 pocket forests in schools and public spaces across Tasmania, transforming small bare patches into thriving habitats for wildlife and living classrooms for young people.
Planted with local native species, these mini-forests restore habitat, support biodiversity, provide natural cooling and help build resilience to climate change. The benefits go beyond the environment. Through hands-on experiences at the Nursery, students learn to propagate, germinate and grow the plants that will become their forest. They then take responsibility for nurturing and monitoring their patch, building practical skills, environmental awareness and a lasting connection to nature.
Pocket Forests grow into powerful, community-led resources of urban greening for environmental education across Tasmania. Every forest creates a legacy — for wildlife, for young people and for healthier, more resilient communities.
